Personal brand project

Standard

For my principles of public relations class I had to do a personal brand project. Basically we had to establish our own personal brand using different social media sites, such as twitter, linkedin, and a blog. Although I have been tweeting and using other social media sites for a while, blogging has always been difficult for me. I do enjoy reading other people’s blogs and I like getting to take a look into someone’s life through the internet, but I have never really thought that I had anything interesting to say on a blog that people would want to read. I’m glad that this project is helping me get over that hurdle with blogging. This is actually a pretty interesting project. We as students have to create an online presence for ourselves, the same way we might create one for and employer or client. I’m glad that this project is helping us prepare for what lies ahead in our careers. I think it will be helpful to know how different social media sites when used together can create something that is professional and not just about connecting to old high school friends anymore. This project was a fun way to show us how that can be done.  I think it is important for college age kids to know that social media is becoming so much more in today’s professional business world. I enjoyed doing this project and have learned a lot from the different experiences associated with it and I know a lot of my classmates feel the same way.

Volunteer experience

Standard

On October 30th, four other students and I volunteered at the Sarasota pumpkin festival for our PUR3000 volunteer assignment. The website said they needed volunteers to help with face painting, hay rides, pumpkin patch, etc. The festival sounded like it would be a great idea, we even thought we would all have fun doing it. But when we got there we were taken in groups of twos to ticket booths where we collected tickets and/or money for people to get into the festival. Since we had an odd number of students, one student had to go work by herself because they wouldn’t allow groups of threes. The festival was poorly organized and I feel all the advertisements were misleading. Tickets to the festival were given away at local businesses and all of the tickets advertised that the event was free. A lot of people left their tickets at home since they thought it was free to get in, but at the gate if you didn’t bring a ticket you had to pay $5.00 to enter. We had a lot of angry customers who didn’t want to pay the money to get in. I even had one man throw his money through the ticket window at me! Needless to say, the volunteers weren’t treated too well. The idea of this festival was great, but in reality the event organization did a terrible job with it. I think this festival had great potential, but the lack of communication and organization caused it to flop.

PR tweet chat

Standard

On last Wednesday night I participated in my first PR twitter chat. I enjoyed seeing all of the different questions and answers from students and PR professionals. Although the chat moved really quick, and it was kind of hard to follow the whole time, It was interesting to know that I was communicating with people from all over the country. There were also several other USF students in the same chat as me, so it was interesting to see people I knew. I enjoyed communicating and getting to network with people in PR. The chat also helped me find new people in PR that I could follow on twitter. I thought the questions they asked were thought provoking, and some of them I never would’ve thought about unless I had seen them in the chat. Some of the questions were pretty easy for me to answer, but some were a little more challenging. I liked seeing what other students answered to the questions, it also made me think more about what I originally thought about the subject. I liked that they use twitter as a form of a chat room, I had never seen that before I had heard about the PR chats. I have been using twitter for a long time, but I only ever used it to communicate with friends. Being in PUR3000 and doing the twitter chats helped me realize that twitter can be used for so much more than news and communication between friends. I learned a lot from the PR tweet chat and look forward to the next one.

First blog post

Standard

Well, this is my first blog post. I still have a lot to do to this site to get it looking good, but for now I need to just figure out what I want to start blogging about. I guess I could just start by posting things I’m interested in, and then hopefully get the hang of blogging more regularly.
